I've loved martial arts since I saw the original Karate Kid on VNS while I was still living in the Philippines. Throughout my childhood and even into my college, I studied a lot of different martial arts. I always had a deep respect for Jiujitsu and always wanted to try it, but life always seemed to get in the way, along with various injures ( 2 herniated disk in my neck, a few in my lower back, torn rotator cuff along with a meniscus and MCL tear).
But God has a funny way of working things out. My kids started taking lessons and were having a blast. After sitting on the sidelines watching for a few months, I got the itch to get on the mats myself. I finally got on the mats in January 22 doing an open mat with one of my best friends and we just about died flailing around what seemed like an eternity. As I laid there praying to God that I wouldn't have a heart attack as I tried to catch my breath on of the parents Ryon, asked if we going to finish the round. I asked how much time was left, and he said about 4 and half minutes We'd had only been rolling for about 30 seconds.
I officially signed up the next Monday, along with 2 of my closet friends. It's been one of the best decisions I've ever made. I've still got my old injuries, but they're not an excuse (I'm a therapist by profession and practice what I preach to my patients about exercise/mobility). Plus I've got amazing training partners and Professor Ted has taught me as well on how to be mindful and protect myself when I roll. I'm now one of the coaches teaching the kids and seeing them perform and grow in character has been a joy to watch.
I have fun every night I come to class or going to open mat, The workout I get is just a bonus for me. The mental health benefits are great as my anxiety has been tempered while my ADHD & hyper fixation have an outlet.
But the best part is the family I have at Chaos. Its an amazing community where I get to hang out with my friends and get to be ninjas in goofy spandex or pajamas. The laughs we share, the victories and defeats, the competition, the troubleshooting and the learning.... the character development, the ideas of being vs. getting humbled. So many things I like to share and say.
If you would like to learn more, ask me on the mats. And then you'll get to experiencethe Chaos Jiujitsu it all for yourself, having fun in all.
